In one of the most exciting races ever witnessed at Albany, the University won from Cornell in the two-mile medley relay on Saturday evening. This was the feature event in the second athletic carnival staged in the State Armory by the 10th Infantry of the New York State guard. D. F. O'Connell '21 fought to a spectacular finish in his eight-lap race around the 176-yard track, cutting down Dickinson's lead of 20 yards at the take-off and winning by three yards. The Crimson runners covered the distance in 8 minutes and 24 seconds.
The four University runners, B. Wharton '22, W. H. Goodwin '20, J. A. McCarthy '22, and D. F. O'Connell '21, ran in this race two, four, six and eight laps respectively. Wharton, the first runner, outran Davison of Cornell in the first two laps and turned over a 15-yard lead to Goodwin when he took the baton. For the first lap Goodwin increased his lead to 20 yards, but John of the Ithaca team speeded up in the second and third laps and cut the lead to five yards. A spurt in the final lap brought him abreast of Goodwin at the take-off line.
Abrew Gains Lead for Cornell.
McCarthy went to the front in his spurt with Abrew and continued to increase his lead in the second, third and fourth laps. Abrew, however, commenced a spurt in the fifth lap that carried him past McCarthy and gained a lead of 20 yards for Cornell, when Dickinson took over the race.
O'Connell, the Crimson anchor man, trailing the Ithacan by this large margin at the start, ran a sensational race and cut down the lead in every lap. In the seventh round he drew even with Dickinson, only to have the latter go once more to the front at the beginning of the final lap. O'Connell spurted in the last 100 yards and carried the Crimson baton across the tape by a three-yard margin.
