To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
I read with a good deal of satisfaction in Wednesday's CRIMSON Mr. Wyman's well-written letter on the "mass of scum" and "vermin" awaiting deportation at Deer Island. The situation could not have been summed up more correctly, in the same number of words by anyone, and it was rather surprising to read an adverse criticism in today's CRIMSON.
Doubtless there are some Americans of unquestionable loyalty, who hold views on this subject as colorless as those expressed this morning by Mr. Shubow; but it doesn't make the rest of us any more certain of their loyalty to have them attempt to show that the Country is "politically intolerant"--simply because this bunch of poisonous reptiles is being driven out. It would be just as reasonable to say that Massachusetts is "intolerant," because convicted murderers in Massachusetts are sent to the electric chair.
So far as the point about the "firing squad" is concerned, I think Mr. Shubow is taking too much for granted when he assumes that Mr. Wyman wants to shoot every misguided American who thinks the Reds are not getting a square deal. On the contrary, Mr. Wyman makes it plain that "disloyal citizens and spies" are the ones to be "used as targets for a firing squad." In this he is perfectly right, and I know from experience, gained in the last two or three years, that the firing squad is an easy and effective method of getting rid of such traitors and criminals.
Mr. Shubow states that he is "just a plain American." This is a bit indefinite, but as the American Legion is setting the standard of Americanism today, I suppose this is the standard to which he refers. If this is so, he has laid himself open to the charge of not living up to the standard because the American Legion never speaks; of the Reds except to say "treat 'em rough" and "kick em out".
"A word to the wise is sufficient"-- and in the future if Mr. Shubow is to be considered a loyal American, he will adopt and live up to the American Legion's ideas of Americanism, in which case there will be no doubt in his mind as to the squareness of the deal handed to the Red fiends now penned up at Deer Island.
