Many mistakes in fielding by the University nine and weakness on the mound, combined with inability to hit in the pinches, gave Brown a, 6-2 victory over the University baseball team in yesterday's game at Soldiers Field, losing the series for the Crimson. The University nine held the visitors for six innings, but thereafter were powerless against the Providence attack, and, although twice filling the bases in the last four innings, were able to bring in only one more run, due to weakness at bat in the crises.
E. S. Hardell '21, who started on the mound for the University, pitched well until the seventh inning, when he allowed two hits which brought in one run. Even then, he was not in a serious position, but was replaced by S. Washburn '20. He pitched the remainder of that inning, and was touched for two safeties which brought in another tally. W. B. Felton '19 started in the box in the ninth, but his place was taken by F. K. Bullard '20 after he had given a base on balls and a wild pitch. Many other substitutions were made during the last two innings, so that a total of nineteen University players took part in the game.
The University infield made many mistakes in judgment, in addition to the misplays recorded in the box-score. J. L. Knowles '19, in left field, with five putouts to his credit, including a spectacular catch in the third inning, was the strongest point in the University defense.
W. B. Frothingham '21, with two singles and a triple, and R. P. Hallowell '20, who hit a double and two singles, were powerful in the University attack, while Weeks, with a home-run and a triple starred for the visitors.
The University gained a one run lead in the first inning when Hallowell hit safely, went to second on a sacrifice by R. W. Emmons '20, reached third on a fielder's choice which retired K. W. Perkins '19, and stole home when Knight, the Brown pitcher, tried to catch Knowles off first. The visitors tried to score in the sixth on Week's home run, and went ahead in the following inning. Although the University scored one more run in the eighth when they knocked Knight from the box, they were never able to seriously threaten the Brown lead.
