Lieutenant Earl Thompson West '18, of Woburn was killed in action in the Argonne Forest on September 30, 1918, instead of at Chateau-Thierry on July 1, as was previously reported. Lieutenant West was leading a patrol to find out the position of the German front line trenches.
West left College on January 5, 1918, to enter Camp Upton, where he was given the certificate of eligibility for promotion and sent overseas. After a period of intensive training he was made an observer for the artillery and stationed with the 301st Infantry. A brother officer said he was by far the best observer in the battalion.
