Coach Haines made several shifts in the first two University crews before sending them out from the West Lynn Boat Club yesterday afternoon, and the results shown by the eights on the water warranted the changes. In the first shell F. B. Whitman '19 was moved forward to number two, in place of R. R. Brown '17, who took the former's place at six. D. L. Moody '18, last week at seven, changed places with A. Coolidge '17 at five. In the second shell the continued absence of R. T. Young '17, due to a case of measles, put D. A. Freeman '19 in his position at two, and K. P. Culbert '17 came up from the third boat to occupy the seat of M. Taylor '18 at four. Coach Haines seemed more satisfied with the new arrangement, although it is probable that he will continue experimental shifts during the next two weeks.
The third and fourth shells again went out on the narrow stretch of open water below Anderson Bridge on the Charles, and succeeded in getting some benefit out of a very limited practice row. All the remaining eights were kept on the machines and sent for a run.
Coxswains Report at 4 O'clock.
All candidates for the position of coxswain in the University or Freshman boats are to report at the Newell Boathouse today at 4 o'clock. Although opportunity for all the new men to get out will be limited until the ice is off the river, it is necessary for prospective coxswains to be on hand at the time indicated.
The management has ordered a new sectional shell from the builder, A. E. Ward, which will be ready for delivery in the near future. The boat breaks into three pieces at seven and two, and will greatly facilitate the work of shell transportation.
