Polish is an essential to the musical comedy gem and it can come only as the result of constant cutting, burnishing and reburnishing. This form of polish is the chief lack of "The Love Mill" as we see it in its youthful newness. The basic qualities of musical glitter and comedy brilliance are present, but to bring them out really successfully a process of careful smoothing and refining must be gone through. There is here also the sincere attempt on the part of the producer to give more than just the average "show." Cast, costumes and scenery reflect much care and thought in the selection.
Mr. Carroll's book is bright; the lines are funny and part of the plot, which is unusually and quite logically in evidence through the evening and the lyrics are to be heard and worth hearing. There is no descent to absence of thought in verse to serve as words for the many lilting tunes. The songs are all in character and entertaining, of, for and by themselves.
The company is well versed in stage ways, but a trifle slow and "pep"-less at present. Each one, however, plays for character values--a trait rare in "musical shows." The heroine is gladsome, and, with Mr. McGowan, sings a clever and unique song, with words of one letter and a catchy melody. The two sisters of Miss Piers and MissWegeman are brimming with comedy. Miss Piers especially brings a most engaging gentle personality to the "un-ethereal" sister, who is always hungry. Miss Michelena is a picture and sings delightfully a too insufficient number of songs. Lynn Overman is humorous in a quiet way. His burlesque classic dance with Miss Hegeman is perhaps the one outstanding feature in comedy and facility. Mr. Von Seyffertitz, though out of place in musical comedy, acts very well.
The music as a whole is charming, with no one particular success, and the scenery is entirely satisfying in the ultramodern way. The production lacks only drive and pruning to put it on the higher levels of musical tid-bits. No small measure of its success is due to a small, good-looking chorus which can really sing.
