60 REPORT FOR WINTER TRACK

PROMISING QUARTET AMONG 25 CANDIDATES FOR SHORT RELAY.

The winter track season opened yesterday afternoon when over 60 men reported for the first practice on Soldiers Field. Only very light work was in order, the men being dismissed after a short preliminary practice.

Coach Donovan had charge of the candidates for the relay teams, and gave them a short workout on the 130-yard board track near the Locker Building. He would make no further statement about the prospects of the team than to say, "It is hard to say what kind of team we shall have this year. It depends largely upon whether or not Willcox leaves after mid-years. The loss of Bingham leaves two positions hard to fill, as he ran on the long and short relay teams. There seems to be no one out now who would be able to take part in both races with the possible exception of Minot."

About 25 men were out for the short relay team, the most promising of whom seem to be W. Willcox, Jr., '17, H. W. Minot '17, H. W. Rose '19 and R. U. Whitney '18. Both of the first two men ran on the relay team that defeated Yale last year. Rose ran on the 1919 team last year against Yale, and Whitney took part in the 1,560-yard race between the second relay team and Wesleyan.

Of the 15 men trying out for the long distance team, only two had experience last year. C. S. Swan '19 ran in the Freshman race against Yale and F. T. Donahue '18 competed against Wesleyan in the second team relay race. Prospects for this team do not seem to be very bright at present, but a fairly good team will probably be developed from this material and from any new men who may come out.

Twelve men reported for the jumps and eight for the weights and hurdles to Dr. Morrill. A large sheet of canvas was stretched across one end of the cage for the hammer throwers, and another was reserved for the shot-putters.

The most promising candidate from the Freshman class was R. W. Harwood '20, who showed up especially well in the pole vault. P. E. Stevenson '20 and H. B. Davis '20 will probably be good for the relay team, and C. F. Batchelder, Jr., '20 is the best candidate for the weights and hurdles.

Times Set for Practice.

Practice will continue every week day for all University and Freshman candidates. A regular schedule of times has been arranged for the men to report: hurdlers, 2.45 o'clock; University short distance relay men, 3.15 o'clock; long distance men, 3.40 o'clock; 1920 relay men and all others, 4 o'clock. Practice for all field event men will come at 2.45 o'clock. On Saturdays, Coach Donovan will be at the field from 11.50 to 1 o'clock.

On Monday afternoons, competitions will be held in the high jump, pole vault and shot put. At the end of winter practice two cups will be given in each event, one cup for the best actual record in each event, and the other for the best average point record plus the allotted handicap. These competitions are open both to Freshmen and upper-classmen.

Meeting for Freshmen Monday.

On next Monday evening at 7 o'clock all Freshmen interested in track will meet in Smith Common Room. Dr. Morrill and several others will speak
