The University fencing team defeated Bowdoin in Hemenway Gymnasium last evening by the score of 7 to 2, in the first match of the season. Although the team had little difficulty in winning, they showed much skill and promise for a victorious team at the Intercollegiate Championship at the end for the season.
Captain W. H. Russell '18 was up to his usual form and won his matches with comparative ease. His third match with Grey was close, however, Russell making the winning touch in the last part of the bout. Grey was undoubtedly the best man on the Bowdoin team for in addition to giving Russell a close match, he defeated E. R. Gay '19 and R. G. Emmons '19, scoring the only two victories for Bowdoin.
This match was the first Crimmins and Gay have competed in, and their showing was very good, the latter winning two matches by the score of 6 to 0, and the former making one 6 to 0 score. Russell added one more such score to the team's credit over Hargreaves. The summary follows:
Russell defeated Moers (B), 7 to 1; Crimmins defeated Hargreaves (B), 5 to 4; Grey (B), defeated Gay, 6 to 3; Russell defeated Hargreaves (B), 6 to 0; Gay defeated Moers (B), 6 to 0; Russell defeated Grey (B), 4 to 3; Crimmins defeated Moers (B), 6 to 0; Gay defeated Hargreaves (B), 6 to 0; Grey (B), defeated Crimmins, 7 to 5.
