Announcement of an increase of $400 in the salary of every full professor at Brown University is a move that will encourage many besides those professors and their families. It is difficult to understand why teaching should so long have been one of the most poorly paid professions, but that the tide has turned, in the university and in the secondary school, accumulating evidence proves. No longer are teachers in boys' schools, for example, paid the meager salaries that led Charles Dickens to plead their cause in his portrayal of Mr. Mell, the master of Salem House, whose boots were sent back by the cobbler, with the message that he could not mend them any more because there was not a bit of the original boot left.
