FIRST CREW BY NARROW MARGIN

Defeated Freshman Crew In Final Spurt by a Quarter of a Length.

In a triangular race in the Basin yesterday between the University and second crews and the first Freshman crew the University won out by a scant quarter of a length. The crews started from the Cottage Farm Bridge with the Freshmen two lengths in the lead. The latter made a poor start but retrieved themselves and were never decisively headed. Both of the University crews started from scratch. The second which was rowing the Henley distance, jumped ahead but was nosed out by the University at the Harvard Bridge, and there was nearly half a length of open water between the crews when they stopped rowing.

The other two crews continued the full 1 7-8 miles, rowing practically a dead heat all of the way. At the very finish the University came through with a winning spurt. W. A. Read, Jr., '18, took three in the Freshman boat in place of T. T. Mackie '18, who is out with a bad knee.

The order of the crews follows:

University.--Stroke, Lund; 7, Cabot; 6, Parson; 5, J. W. Middendorf; 4, Harwood; 3, Stebbins; 2, Morgan; bow, Murray; cox., Kreger.

Second.--Stroke, Brown; 7, Meyer; 6, H. S. Middendorf; 5. Soucy; 4. Culbert; 3, Talcott; 2, Busk; bow, Whitmarsh; cox, Cameron.
