For nine innings of yesterday's game McCarthy, the Holy Cross pitcher, held the University hitters to two hits and maintained a 1 to 1 tie, but in the last of the tenth, Gannett slammed a hard one through third base for two bases, and came home with the University's winning run when Harte duplicated with a long double to left field.
From the very start, the contest was a pitchers' duel. In the first, with two down, Harte drove in Harvard's first tally with a single, Abbot making the run. In the fifth, Holy Cross evened up matters. McCarthy drew a pass, went to second and third on two successive errors by Whitney, and scored when Graney singled.
The game saw another shift in the University line-up. Reed has been displaced by M. B. Phillips '15, and the change seems for the better. In each of the last few games Reed has shown up rather poorly, for his weakness at the bat has been followed by weakness in fielding. Phillips failed to hit safely, but his fielding was perfect.
This victory makes the second over Holy Cross, and was the first gained against the Worcester nine on Soldiers Field for 3 years.
The summary: Earned runs--Harvard 1. Sacrifice hits--Mahan, Murphy. Stolen bases--Phillips, Abbot. Two-base hits--Gannett, Harte, Abbot. Bases on balls--Whitney 5, McCarthy 5. Left on bases -- Harvard 11, Holy Cross 6. Struck out--Whitney 9, McCarthy 4. Time--2h., 15m. Umpires--Conway and McLaughlin. *One out when winning run was scored.
