At the request of the Student Council the CRIMSON prints below an account of the various non-athletic organizations in the University. The list includes the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the registered clubs and the papers.

The Phi Beat Kappa Society is the oldest Greek letter society in America. The Harvard chapter, Alpha of Massachusetts, was founded in 1779. The society endeavors to gather together those men in each class who lead in scholastic attainments and also by the example and activity of this group of scholars to further the intellectual interests of the whole undergraduate body. The criterion of election is always the candidate's scholarship.

Under the present system not more than forty men may be elected from each class. At the beginning of each year the College Office sends to the "Junior Eight" of the previous year the names of the twelve highest Juniors and of the forty-four highest Seniors, exclusive of those already elected to the society. From these names eight Juniors and twenty-two Seniors are chosen. Thus, during the year, the society is composed of thirty men from the Senior class and eight, the so-called "Junior Eight," from the Junior class. Later in the year, five more Senior may be elected. At the close of the year another five Seniors may be added.

Phi Beta Kappa Standard.

The standard by reason of its obviously competitive basis varies a little from year to year according to the quality of each class in scholarship; but a man who makes the First Scholarship group once, or the Second List twice, is usually eligible for membership. Intellectual achievements in outside activities are always given due weight but a student's work in extra-curriculum pursuits is not regarded as making up for deficiencies in his scholastic ranking at the Office.

In short the whole system aims at choosing as automatically as possible the forty best scholars in each class.
