SPLENDID PORTRAIT OF DEAN

PICTURE OF L. B. R. BRIGGS RECENTLY COMPLETED AND NOW IN UNION.

The life-size portrait of Dean Briggs, which Mr. Edmund C. Tarbell has been painting during the past two years has recently been finished and was yesterday hung in the Living Room of the Union. The portrait is the gift of the classes of 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, and the artist himself, whose generosity thus made the funds raised by the above classes sufficient to cover the cost of the painting. Mr. Tarbell has at the same time wished to express his sincere appreciation and pleasure in the painting of the portrait and his hopes that he in some measure caught the qualities which have endeared Dean Briggs to so many college generations. In the depicting of the features in a moment of repose the painter considers the portrait one of his most successful pictures.

The picture has been hung in the good light on the north wall of the Living Room to the right of the middle entry in a similar position to Sargent's portrait of Major Higginson, with which it is the same size.

The credit for the securing of the artist and the successful accomplishment of the undertaking belongs to a committee composed of F. Ayer '11, E. T. Hunt '10, C. M. Storey, '12 G. H. Roosevelt '13, Professor E. W. Forbes '95, and Professor I. N. Hollis h.'99. Mr. Tarbell is one of the leading painters of America belonging to the famous group called "The Ten American Painters." His paintings have taken high honors at the various national expositions, including the Paris Exposition of 1900 and the Chicago World's Fair. Several of his other paintings are on exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
