A short sketch of the history of the Panama Canal Zone from the time of Columbus down and unusual pictures and incidents of the actual work of construction were presented by Mr. F. W. Davis, fellow of the National Geographic Society, in the Union last night.
Mr. Davis paid a special tribute to former President Roosevelt '80 and to Col. Goethals, to the former for making the Canal a possibility, to the latter for making it an actuality.
John F. Wallace and John F. Stevens, the first two engineers, who served from 1904 to 1907, paved the way for Col. Goethals. The laying out of the Panama Railroad by J. F. Stevens was in itself a notable piece of work. Remarkable pictures were shown which brought out the whole situation, and went far to explain the many technical details. The huge locks, the great dant, the artificial lake, Culebra cut, were portrayed and explained.
