The University second crew accomplished a remarkable feat at Philadelphia on Saturday when it won two races in one afternoon. The showing was especially commendable because among the crews defeated were the Yale second boat, and the first Annapolis eight which defeated the first University during spring recess. Each winning both of these races at their first appearance in the American Rowing association regatta the University oarsmen set a precedent which should stand for some time.
In the first race, the junior event, the second crews of Princeton, the Naval Academy, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale lined up with the University shell. Though Yale had the best position, Harvard overcame this handicap by making a quick start, leading all the other boats after a dozen strokes. From the quarter-mile mark to the finish Harvard was never headed, the real race being between Yale and Pennsylvania for second place. Just before the finish was reached, Yale passed Pennsylvania and after a powerful spurt finished about a half a length behind the University. The time for the distance of one mile and 550 yards was 6 minutes and 42 seconds.
Captures Senior Event Also.
Three races took place between this and the senior event, which was the feature of the day. In this race, besides the Yale second crew, the University faced the Union Boat Club, composed of former Harvard oarsmen, the Syracuse University crew which won the race at Poughkeepsie last year, and the first Navy crew which defeated the University crew at Annapolis. Again Harvard got the lead at the start with Yale second and the Union Boat Club last. Harvard soon settled down to a steady 33 stroke, which just before the finish was put up to 37. At the half-distance mark, the Union Boat Club became entangled with the Navy, spoiling the former's chances for victory. Despite a wonderful burst of speed from the Union Boat Club near the finish, Harvard went across the line 5 feet ahead. The time was 6 minutes, 40 and 3-5 seconds, almost 2 seconds better than her time in the first race.
Following is the order of the University crew: stroke, Lund; 7, Curtis; 6, Parson; 5, Meyer; 4, H. S. Middendorf; 3, Murray; 2, Busk; bow, Saltonstall (captain); cox., Kreger.
Yale's Class Crew Wins.
The Yale 1915 crew won from the Harvard 1916 eight in the Basin on Saturday afternoon by almost three lengths. At the start the Sophomores gained a lead of one half a length, but were able to hold it for only a short while. When the Harvard Bridge was reached, the two boats were about even, but Yale soon started to gain steadily until there was over a length of open water between the shells. The Sophomores were unable to cut down the lead consistently, and finished 11 seconds slower than their opponents. The time for the distance of 1 and 7-8 miles was 10 minutes, 18 2-5 seconds.
The orders follow:
Yale 1915--Stroke, A. Morse: 7, Wyman; 6, Robb; 5, English; 4, Bennett (captain): 3, Sefton; 2. MacCreery; bow, H. Morse; cox., Schoelkopf.
