DECIDING GAME TO PRINCETON

SUPERIORITY OF FORWARDS WON SERIES AND CONTEST 4 TO 1.

The University hockey team lost to Princeton 4-1 in the deciding game of the series at St. Nicholas rink, Saturday evening. Despite the strong defence of Willetts and Claflin and Carnochan's brilliant work at goal, the fast Princeton forwards succeeded in scoring three goals in the first half, a lead which the desperate energy shown by the University substitutes in the second period was unable to close up.

Failure of Defense Tactics.

The tactics used by the Harvard team in the victory over Princeton a month ago, to guard against the danger of Baker's individual skill, were in part the reason for Saturday's defeat. Although Baker was prevented from shooting at the Harvard cage during most of the game, it was impossible to stop his sweeping rushes down the rink and the well-guaged passes which enabled the team-mates to shoot to advantage.

Score Early in Game.

The first goal, made after four minutes of play, was scored by Kuhn, who drove the puck into the Harvard net after Baker's long shot had rebounded from Carnochan's shin. Nine minutes of fast play folowed, the University forwards vainly attempting to break the opposing line. Again Baker succeeded in dodging the Harvard defence and, circling back of the net, passed the puck out to MacColl, who drove it past Carnochan for the second score. Princeton's next goal resulted from a fluke, when Kuhn lifted a long shot from the centre of the rink and Willetts, attempting to stop the puck in mid-air, deflected its course so that it bounded into the Harvard net. In the last minute of the period Phillips scored from a scrimmage in front of the Princeton goal.

Substitute Line in Second Half.

In the second half, Doty replaced Willetts at point and Wanamaker went in for Phillips, whose injured hand was beginning to weaken. Curtis and Morgan replaced the two wings. In face of the new energy thrown against them, the Princeton team played safe, and succeeded in keeping the University attack at bay. The only score was made by MacColl, who received the puck from Baker after the latter had again pierced the University defence.

The line-up: HARVARD.  PRINCETON. S. P. Clark, Curtis, l.w.  r.w., Kilner Phillips, Wanamaker, l.c.  r.c., Baker Hopkins, r.c.  l.c., Kuhn Smart, Morgan, r.w.  l.w., MacColl Claflin, c.p.  c.p., Emmons Willetts, Doty, p.  p., Peacock Carnochan, g.  g., Winants

As a result of this victory, Princeton has won the hockey championship. Since there is no intercollegiate league this year, the title is this year practically decided by the results of the three-cornered three-game series. The University, however, has still the most important game of the season to play, the contest which is to decide the series between Harvard and Yale and which will be played at the Arena Saturday.
