HOCKEY MATERIAL ABUNDANT

Eleven Men From University Squad Have Been Lost, But Many Promising Candidates for Seven.

The prospects of turning out a championship hockey team this winter are apparently excellent. Ten men from the University squad of last year have been lost by graduation and one by illness, but there is an abundance of good material from last year's second team and from the Freshman team, which had an unusually successful season. There will be a meeting of all aspirants for the squad probably next week, the exact date of which will be announced later. Practice will begin after the close of the football season.

Of last year's squad, S. Adams, G. M. Carnochan, S. P. Clark, J. C. Devereux, S. T. Hopkins, H. C. Morgan, L. Saltonstall, P. H. Smart, W. M. Washburn and W. A. Willetts have graduated. This leaves a scarcity of experienced men for the forward line, and last year's Freshman team will be looked to for at least two forwards. T. K. Fisher '17, G. Townsend '17, E. O. Baker '17 and R. Baldwin '17 all did excellent work in the line on the 1917 team and should prove valuable men this year. J. E. P. Morgan '17 and J. C. Harris '17 with J. I. Wylde '17 at goal constituted the defense on this seven, all of whom would make valuable additions to the University squad. E. M. Wanamaker '16 is the only man left from last year's University team in the forward line, as M. B. Phillips '15, who was operated on for appendicitis last summer in all probability will be unable to play. Other Possibilities for the forward line are: T. E. Murphy '16, D. P. Rumsey '16, E. M. Townsend, Jr., '16, H. P. Trainer '16 and G. H. Kissel '17.

There are an unusually large number of candidates for defense positions and there should be little difficulty in building up a strong defense around Captain Claflin who will probably play his old position, coverpoint. For the positions of point and coverpoint there are P. M. Brown '15, C. S. Clark '16, A. Cunningham '16, A. F. Doty '16, J. C. Harris '17, J. E. P. Morgan '17, G. A. McKinlock, Jr., '16 and B. B. Williams '15. The following will try out for goal: E. F. Atkins, Jr., '15, H. DeFord, Jr., '15, R. Harte '17, F. Wigglesworth '15 and J. I. Wylde '17, Doubtless there will also be other candidates for these positions when practice begins.

This year the University will play the usual three-game series with Yale and Princeton for the championship and in addition games have been arranged with Dartmouth, Cornell, McGill, Columbia; Amherst Agricultural, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, St. Paul's School, Boston Athletic Association and the Har-Club of Boston. The dates of these contests will be announced later.

Baker Not in B. A. A.

It has been announced that H. A. H. Baker, Princeton '14, the famous hockey player, will not be a member of the Boston Athletic Association team this season.

This decision on Baker's part will greatly weaken the B. A. A. since, if the Harvard Club has a team, many men who would ordinarily represent the B. A. A., will play on this team. Without Baker in its line-up and with all the former University stars on the Harvard Club team, the B. A. A. would stand little chance. If Baker were here the division of material would be simple.

It has also been announced that the Harvard Club and the B. A. A. will not both be represented in the America Amateur Hockey League. Whether the Harvard Club will have a team or not this year will be definitely decided next week
