A number of impromptu track trials in the Stadium yesterday afternoon saw some remarkable times recorded for this time of year. By far the best of these was the performance of R. St. B. Boyd '14 in the two-mile run, which he won in 9 minutes and 37 seconds, bettering his own Harvard-Yale dual record by 8 seconds. F. W. Copeland '13 finished some ten feet behind him. In the mile run H. M. Warren '13 beat out H. G. MacLure '15 by about 5 yards in the time of 4 minutes and 31 seconds.
Two 440-yard races were held. The first a race between the half-milers was won by W. J. Bingham '16 in 50 3-5 seconds, R. G. Huling '13 second; the other was captured by R. H. Delafield '16 in 51 seconds with J. C. Rock '15 second. The half-mile race for Freshmen was won by G. Lamont '16 in 2 minutes and 6 seconds.
Seven Men Leave for Philadelphia.
Seven members of the University track team will leave Boston at 10 o'clock this morning, to take part in the Pennsylvania carnival at Franklin Field, Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon. These and their events are as follows: Captain J. B. Cummings '13, A. L. Jackson '14, T. O. Freeman '14, hurdles; J. O. Johnstone '16, A. W. Moffat '13, high jump; T. Cable '13, hammer-throw and broad jump; J. B. Camp '15, high jump and pole-vault. Coach Donovan and manager W. Tufts, Jr., '13 will also make the trip.
Handicap Meet Next Week.
A handicap track meet, open to members of all four classes, will be held at the Stadium next Friday afternoon. Entry books have been placed at Leavitt & Peirce's and the Rendezvous. Entries will close next Wednesday at 7 o'clock. Competitors who have not taken strength tests since January 1 will not be allowed to participate. Men can take strength tests any afternoon in Hemenway Gymnasium.
The handicap meet will include the full list of thirteen track and field events. Cups will be awarded the winners of first and second places in all events. This contest is intended especially for inexperienced men, and all track candidates should enter.
