HOCKEY SQUAD BEGINS WORK

FIRST PRACTICE AT ARENA TODAY, SEASON'S PROSPECTS ENCOURAGING.

The first practice of the year for the University hockey squad will be held this afternoon at 5 o'clock in the Boston Arena. Coach Winsor will be at the Arena to give directions regarding the proper paraphernalia and to out line the final plans for the seasons work. Practice will be held this year as usual on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 5, and, later in the season, on Tuesday and Thursday at 6. With A. Winsor, Jr., as medical supervisor, together with the strong material from last year's University team and the 1916 freshman team, the prospects for this coming season are excellent.

There is a possibility that the management may not be able to open the Arena this afternoon as planned, in which case the first practice will be postponed, probably until Monday. A notice for members of the squad will be posted in Leavitt and Peirce's before noon today.

Three Lost by Graduation

Of last year's seven, Sortwell, Gardner, and Goodale have graduated, leaving two defense positions and one place on the forward line vacant. This latter position will probably be taken by either Adams or Wanamaker, captain of last year's Freshman team. Of the defense positions, goal will be contested for by Carnochan, Washburn and Ervin, while Claflin is a probability for the position of coverpoint. The forward line is complete as played last year, with the exception of Sortwell. If Claflin is shifted to the defense, either Morgan or Clark will take his place on the forward line. Captain Wilets will keep his old position on the defense with the possibility of a change to coverpoint. Phillips and Hopkins formed the left side of the forward line last year and with Curtis and Rumsey of the 1916 team as substitutes this side of the line should be well cared for.

Among the other candidates for the forward line are Smart and Hanson, both of whom won their "H" last year, while J. C. Devereux '14, who played on his Freshman class team, shows promise of becoming a strong forward. Other men for the defense positions are Doty of last year's Freshman team, and Burns.
