All three University crews have had a week of steady improvement. The cooler weather seems to have given them a snap that was lacking before and both coach Wray and Captain Reynolds are satisfied that they will do good work in the race in the Basin on next Tuesday. During the first part of the week the crews took long, easy paddles, Coach Wray paying particular attention to the quick pull through and slow recovery which makes the boat run between strokes. Yesterday and the day before the crews tried racing starts and fast stretches at 32 to 36 strokes a minute in preparation for the race.
The only change in the University boat is that Middendorf has replaced Parson at 6, the latter going to 6 in the second. Otherwise the crews are rowing as they did last week, the orders being as follows:
University crew.--Stroke Chanler; 7, Schall; 6, Middendorf; 5, L. Curtis, 4, Harwood; 3, Reynolds; 2, Talcott; bow, Murray; cox., Gallaher.
Second.--Stroke, Chichester; 7, Meyer; 6, Parson; 5, Carver; 4, Buskt; 3, Whitmarsh; 2, Herrick; bow, Storrow; cox., Kreger.
Third.--Stroke, Lund; 7, Emerson; 6, Graham; 5, Hubbard; 4, Jeffries; 3, Boyer; 2, E. Curtis; bow, Wilkinson; cox., Enright.
Freshman Boat Light.
Coach Wray has been teaching the Freshmen to pull together their various strokes, and has not yet attempted to give the boat speed. The crew is, however, quickly coming into form. The material this year is fairly light, as shown by the fact that Stebbins, at six, is the only man in the boat weighing over 160 pounds. The order has seen as follows: Stroke, White; 7, Higginson; 6, Stebbins; 5, Hutchins; 4, Brown; 3, Eaton; 2, Young; bow, Chadwick; cox., Cameron.
Graded Crews a Success
The new system of club rowing at the Weld boathouse is working excellently. The first Eliot and Thayer crews have been determined upon and are steadily improving while the lower crews, though for the most part made up of inexperienced material, are being drilled in the first essentials. The two first crews are now rowing as follows:
Thayer.--Stroke, J. Storrow; 7, Osborne; 6, Howe; 5, Talbott; 4, Choate; 3, Thorndike; 2, Baylies; bow, Winslow; cox., Cheney.
Eliot.--Stroke, Henry; 7, Schroeder; 6, Kingsbury; 5, Foster; 4Fisher; 3, Bacon; 2, Lynn; bow, Belmont; cox., Packard.
