CREW WORK DURING RECESS

First Eight Won Two Races.--Metcalf at 7 and Newton at 5.

Two races between the first and second University crews and the Freshman crew were held in the Basin during the recess, the University crew winning in each case. The first race was rowed in the upper Basin over the mile course between the Cottage Farm Bridge and Harvard Bridge on Friday afternoon. The river was very rough and all the shells shipped a considerable amount of water. The University crew drew steadily away from the others, finishing at Harvard Bridge two lengths ahead of the second crew, which in turn led the Freshman crew by about the same distance.

Shift in University Order.

On Saturday a change was made in the orders. Newton was shifted from 7 to 5 in the University boat, Metcalf coming up from the second crew to the seventh oar, and Mills, formerly at 5 in the first boat, taking Metcalf's place at 7 in the second boat.

The second race was rowed over the full 1 7-8 miles course from the Cottage Farm Bridge to the Union Boat Club Saturday afternoon. Excellent weather favored a fast race and the crews were close together for the first mile. The University crew held the lead throughout, however, and finished almost three lengths ahead of the second boat, which had gradually increased its lead over the Freshman boat to fully three lengths at the finish. In this race the University crews showed considerable improvement over previous work.

The crews also rowed Thursday morning and afternoon, and Friday and Saturday mornings. On Friday morning the work consisted of a 9-mile paddle, downstream to the Union Boat Club and back up the river to a point about two miles above the University boathouse.

Although the practice has been considerably handicapped by unfavorable weather the work of the crews has been satisfactory.
