SECOND TEAM TIED FIRST

University Men Given Severe Defensive Tryout But Little Offensive Work in Long Scrimmage.

Yesterday's football work in the Stadium was mainly directed toward the strengthening of the University team's defence. Scrimmage with the second team lasted an hour, and resulted in a 7 to 7 tic. Such a score was largely due to the fact that the second team was given possession of the ball the greater part of the time, and the University thus given comparatively few chances for line-plunging. Considering this, and the fact that many of the coaches lined up with the second team at various times, the score does not indicate a poor showing on the part of the first team.

Early in the play, Wendell scored for the first team on a fumble by one of the opposing backfield. Recovering the ball, he ran 40 yards for a touchdown. A good punt-out was made, and Felton easily kicked the goal.

Brilliant Run by Hardwick.

The score for the seconds was made later on by Hardwick who was used all of the afternoon to do their punting, but who did not go into the scrimmage. From the seconds' 45-yard line, he signalled for a punt; the pass came low, however, and he had no opportunity to kick. Instead, he ran with the ball making his way through all University team tacklers for 55 yards and a touchdown. Taking this fact into consideration, that the run was made against the first team and not with it, it was unusually brilliant. Priest kicked the goal, tying the score.

Many Coaches in Second's Line-up.

Between the two touchdowns, there was an interval of stiff scrimmage. The University was weaker on the offense than ever before, but this was due to a plan adopted purposely to make their work more difficult, namely, that of playing a number of coaches with the second team. At one time when the University attacked, it was opposed by Fish at right guard, P. Withington at centre, L. Withington at left tackle, and Smith at left end. Later on, Leary went in at right guard for a short time.

The second team almost scored again on forward passes.

H. Frothingham, who was injured earlier in the season, was back in the game yesterday at left end. T. Frothingham took Hitchcock's place at right tackle and Cleary played left tackle. Hitchcock, though slightly injured in Wednesday's practice, was on the field in uniform. Both he and Storer, however, were given a complete rest.
