HARD FOOTBALL PRACTICE

LONG SCRIMMAGE YESTERDAY IN STADIUM.--FARLEY JOINS COACHES.

The work on Soldiers Field yesterday again consisted largely of a long hard scrimmage. The only important change in the line was at right guard, where Trumbull replaced Driscoll during the earlier part of the afternoon. Wendell was again at his old position of fullback. Gardner was on the field, but did not play, Logan taking his place at quarterback.

The first score for the University team came within a very few minutes of the start of play, H. Hardwick carrying the ball through the right side of the line and running 60 yards behind good interference for a touchdown. A short time later Hardwick scored again on much the same kind of play.

At this point many substitutes were put in on the University team and no other score was made until the closing minutes of play. After a succession of line plays, Willetts went through tackle for the final touchdown.

Improvement in Line.

A great improvement appears to have been made in the strength of the University line, a fact which should be of the greatest encouragement, as it was the line which showed the greatest weakness in last Saturday's game. Although team B was given the ball throughout the greater part of the play, it was never able to make constant gains.

Hitchcock Injured.

Hitchcock suffered an injury to his shoulder, which will probably not prove serious, but may keep him out of the game for several days. He is one of the strongest men in the line and any permanent injury to him would prove a great handicap to the team. Frothingham replaced him at right tackle.

Coaching Staff Increased.

The large number of coaches who have been seen on the field during the earlier part of the season has been still further increased by the presence of J. W. Farley '99, who is now an acting member of the Harvard Athletic Committee. He played end on the University team in the famous game in which Yale was defeated 17 to 0. L. D. Smith '12, taking his former position of end on the University team, played for a short period in the scrimmages. P. Withington went in at centre for a few minutes and L. Withington also played at right tackle. The following coaches were out in uniform to assist Head Coach Haughton: Fisher, L. Withington, and P. Withington in charge of the linemen; Wigglesworth, in charge of the quarterbacks; and Leary, G. Browne, and L. D. Smith, in charge of the ends.

The line-up of the University team was as follows: Felton, Smith, O'Brien, l.e.; Storer, Cleary, Beebe, l.t.; Pennock, F. Withington, l.g.; Parmenter, Wigglesworth, c.; Trumbull, Driscoll, Weston, r.g.; Hitchcock, T. Frothingham, r.t.; O'Brien, Coolidge, Milholland, Hollister, r.e.; Logan, Bradley, q.b.; H. Hardwick, Bradlee, T. Hardwick, l.h.b.; Brickley, Lingard, r.h.b.; Wendell, Bettle, Willetts, f.b.
