The final session of the first annual conference of the Bible Study Institute of Massachusetts and Rhode Island was held yesterday. The conference was very successful in every way about 35 delegates being present from over 15 colleges and schools. The meetings were thus very representative and were of great value in discussing and formulating methods for carrying on Bible Study work.
In the conferences held in Phillips Brooks House yesterday morning and afternoon the problems of the selection and training of the Bible Study Committee and the work and relation of the leader and study groups were discussed at length.
The dinner held in the Trophy Room of the Union at 6 o'clock was attended by about 40 men. Professor G. F. Moore h.'06, presided and among others, President Fitch of Andover Theological Seminary spoke and emphasized several salient points in connection with Bible Study work.
Following the separate conference held for college students and for preparatory school students, at which Bible Study methods were discussed in detail, Mr. C. S. Cooper, International Bible Study Secretary gave the final address, strongly stating his belief that the personality of the leader of the utmost importance in this work.
The following five resolutions which were adopted give, in a concise form, the general trend of the work of this session, Resolved: That the principles and psychology of salesmanship should be applied to Bible Study Groups; that the leader should be selected for his knowledge and sympathy with the problems of student life rather than for his ability as a scholar; that Bible Study purposes and methods should be vital and social in application rather than historical or critical; that the interest of the faculty in Bible Study work should be recognized; that the faith and ability of the leader should be recognized.
