SHIFTS IN FRESHMAN CREW

E. Curtis Now Rowing Stroke and L. Curtis No. 5 in the Eight.

Harvard Crew Quarters, Red Top, New London, Con., June 13, 1911.--Several important changes were made in the Freshman crew today. When the eight went out in the morning E. Curtis was put in at stroke, sending Trumbull back to 2; Cromble was dropped to the four, taking Curtis's place. The crew paddled down to the three-mile mark and the improvement in the rowing showed the advantage of the change. Curtis has fine rhythm and should accomplish much in getting the crew together as a unit.

In the afternoon a further change was made in the substitution of L. Curtis for Converse at 5. This shift also worked to advantage. The two eights paddled as far as the three-mile mark together and for a time the Freshmen held their own with the University crew, both rowing the same stroke. On the last mile to the railroad bridge the University eight went on alone, raising the stroke gradually to 32. This last stretch was some of the best rowing the crew has done this season.

The three fours were sent out for the first time this morning; the University four was a trifle off form in the morning, as it had not rowed since Saturday morning, but in the afternoon marked improvement was shown. The work of all the crews today was very satisfactory and the showing of the Freshman eight was especially encouraging. A case of mumps was discovered in the Freshman quarters this morning when Hay, the Freshman coxswain was taken ill and was sent back to Cambridge. N. Roosevelt was summoned to take his place. The other men are all in good condition. R. F. Herrick '90 paid a short visit to the quarters today and watched the crews from the launch.
