PROGRESS OF VARSITY CLUB

Exterior of New Building Nearly Completed.--Interior Probably Ready for Use by May 1.

During the last month work on the construction of the new Varsity Club has progressed rapidly and from the outside the building looks nearly as it will when completed. It is highly improbable that the contractors will be able to complete their work before May 1, and therefore the University baseball team will probably be the first to make use of the new training quarters.

The slating of the roof was finished a week ago and after the carved panels were set into place over the main entrance the scaffolding was taken down. The only work left to be done on the exterior of the building is the final pointing up of the brick work and the laying of the limestone slabs which are to form the base of the iron balustrade on the front porch.

At present work is being directed toward putting up the wooden partitions and the rough framework of the interior which will be ready for plastering in about two weeks. Passages connecting the building with the Union have been made in the basement and on every floor, and will be opened up as soon as the interior work has progressed far enough. The plumbing and electric lighting systems have been installed and were recently tested by the city inspector. As at least a month must be allowed to give the plaster time to dry and harden, the wood and limestone flooring, oak panelling, and other interior finishings will not be begun until the end of January.

The first floor of the clubhouse will be devoted to living quarters, including a large entrance hall, a grill room, and a spacious living room. Oak panelling, limestone flooring, and a massive staircase will be the features of the hall. The living room will occupy the entire width of the building on its eastern side and will be finished in dark oak with a large brick fireplace at one end. The second and third floors will contain the dining rooms for the University and Freshman teams and several other rooms for use of the coaches. Five hydraulic dumbwaiters will carry the food from the basement, where the kitchen is situated, to the various training tables.
