The Stadium, Soldiers Field, Nov. 25, 1911, 1.30 P. M. An hour before the game was scheduled to commence the crowds began to arrive. At 1.30 the Harvard bands started and the singing was followed by great applause. With the Harvard band playing "Up the Street," F. R. Hancock '12 stepped out and started the Harvard sections singing "Harvardiana." The Yale stands replied with "Yale will Fight Till the End." Harvard cheered Yale and the latter returned the courtesy. At 1.52 Captain Fisher trots on the field at the head of the Harvard squad. The condition of the Field is excellent considering last night's hard rain. The Harvard stands cheer madly for Fisher and the squad Felton and Blackall get off some good punts in preliminary practice.
Two minutes later the Yale squad comes on to the gridiron. Yale ran through signals, and Camp did some kicking. Harvard tried a few plays in signals.
The teams lined up as follows: The Start of the Game. Yale won, the toss and chose to receive the ball. Smith kicked off for Harvard to Gallauer on Yale's 30-yard line. Howe made 8 yards on a fake punt around left end. Howe's punt passed Gardner to Harvard's 18-yard line where Francis recovered for Yale. Philbin went to the 10-yard line through Harvard's right side. Howe tried for a drop kick but the pass was poor and Leslie and Smith threw for a loss, the ball going to Harvard on downs. Yale penalized 5 yards for offside. Felton punts to Howe at midfield. Philbin made 5 yards through Harvard's left guard, Philbin's end run failed to gain and Howe punted to Campbell on Harvard's 20-yard line. Felton returned the kick to Howe who was tackled in his tracks. Yale was penalized 15 yards for interference within 80-yard zone Harvard still retained ball. Wendell failed to gain on a line plunge. Felton again punted to Howe on Yale's 40-yard line; he fumbled but recovered. Spalding was thrown for a 5-yard loss by Felton. Howe punted to Campbell who ran the ball to midfield. Campbell made 5 yards on an end run from a fake punt. Paul replaced Gallauer. Gardner made 2 yards on quarter-back line plunge. Campbell punted to Howe on Yale's 20-yard line. Huntington tackled Camp. Camp punted to Gardner at midfield. Campbell made 5 yards through Francis. Harvard penalized 5 yards for delaying game. Felton punts over Howe's head to Yale's 8-yard line, where Leslie recovered. Potter's Pass Fails. Potter replaced Gardner. Loree for Francis. Potter forward passes into Spalding's hands, Harvard losing fine chance to score. Howe punted out to Potter on Harvard's 40-yard line. Yale penalized 20 yards for rough play by Bomeisler. Huntington made two yards through the line and the quarter ended with the ball in Harvard's possession on Yale's 18-yard line. Score: Harvard, 0; Yale, 0. Second Period. Wendell makes three yards through Yale's left side. Potter, standing on the 25-yard line, tries an unsuccessful goal from field. Yale puts the ball in play on the 25-yard line and Spalding failed to gain. Camp fails also on a fake punt, and then punts outside bounds on Yale's 42-yard line. Potter tries an onside kick, which was recovered by Howe on Yale's 20-yard line. Camp makes three yards through Harvard's left tackle. Camp punts to Campbell on Harvard's 45-yard line. Reynolds goes in for Campbell. Wendell makes eight yards through Yale's left guard. Wendell, on another try, fails to gain: Yale penalized five yards for offside. Harvard penalized five yards for offside. Potter makes a wild forward pass which goes into waiting arms of Spalding. Yale's ball on her 20-yard line. Philbin goes through center on a shift play and runs to Harvard's 50-yard line. Philbin and Camp fail to gain and Howe tries to punt. The ball goes to Harvard, however, as the ball does not go 20 yards. Felton punts to Howe on Yale's 40-yard line. Philbin cannot gain by rushing and Howe attempts a forward pass to Avery, which goes wrong. Camp punts to Reynolds on Harvard's 35-yard line. Reynolds thrown for a loss by Gallauer on an end run. Felton punts to Camp, who fumbles, but recovers. Sheldon replaces Bomeisler, who is injured. Howe made first down on a quarter-back run around Harvard's right end. Avery is hurt, but stays in game. Howe fails to gain on a fake punt. Camp kicks to Reynolds on Harvard's 25-yard the Avery makes the tackle. Felton returned the kick for Harvard to Yale's 59-yard line. Philbin makes two yards through left tackle. Camp forward passes to Howe, but ball hits the ground. Yale punts and the bounding ball is pursued by both Harvard and Yale players. Reynolds finally recovers the ball and period ends with ball in Harvard's possession on the Crimson's 40-yard. The Score: Harvard, 0; Yale, 0. Comment on First Half.
