The second University eight was victorious in the four-mile race held in the Basin yesterday afternoon, the University crew being unable to overcome its long handicap of 20 seconds, although in one hundred yards more the latter would probably have overtaken the second. The third eight finished about six feet behind the University crew.
The first two crews to start left the Stillman Infirmary at a racing stroke. The University eight started at a low stroke but soon raised the beat until it reached 38. The third eight began to fall back, the other two maintaining the same relative positions until the Cottage Farm Bridge was reached. At this point the University eight began to get together and commenced gaining upon the leaders. At Harvard Bridge two lengths of open water separated the third and second eights, the University crew being an equal distance behind. About one quarter of a mile from the finish the latter made a final spurt raising the stroke to 40, and cutting down the second's lead at every pull. The distance was too short, however, and the second finished a winner by a scant half-length, the University eight just nosing the third out of second place.
The work of the University eight during the first two miles was far from satisfactory. The stroke was clipped short at the catch and at the finish, and the control of the slides was poor with the result that the boat checked badly. After passing Cottage Farm Bridge, however, improvement commenced, and the boat went better and better up to the finish, the final spurt being a splendid exhibition of rowing at a high stroke.
The weather conditions were excellent, with a light quartering wind and smooth water.
