Communication

The Pierian Sodality.

(We invite all men in the University to submit communications on subjects of timely interest.)

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

May I use your columns to enlighten your readers in regard to the Pierian Sodality Orchestra trials? Every year there are many men in the University posessing sufficient musical ability who through ignorance or modesty fail to become candidates for the University Orchestra. To these men I should like to say that positions in the Orchestra are open to players of ordinary as well as superior ability, and that orchestral experience is not a necessary qualification. The Pierian offers a rare opportunity to develop latent powers, to become acquainted with orchestral methods, and to play both pieces of a purely popular character, and works of the master-composers. Past members will testify that work in the Orchestra is equivalent to a course in music; members of the Faculty are eager to recommend the Pierian to everyone interested in music as a pastime or as an art. The Orchestra offers Freshmen, especially, a splendid opportunity to meet fellows of their own and upper classes; in no University activity are men more drawn together than when rehearsing and playing under the same leader, for the essential factor of orchestral success is the co-operation and harmony of the individual players. Every man in the University who is acquainted or desires to become acquainted with any orchestral instrument will be welcome at the trials this evening or tomorrow. C. S. PARKER '12.
