THE CRIMSON COMPETITION.

The first competition of the year leading to positions on the editorial board of the CRIMSON will begin this evening. This competition is open to Sophomores only and consists of gathering and writing news during a period of about thirteen weeks. Thus, although exacting while it lasts, it does not interfere with the necessary preparation for mid-year examinations. About ten news editors are elected from each class, and as yet only two of the places are filled by men in the class of 1914.

The CRIMSON competition is valuable not only for the practical experience in reporting, but because it brings the candidates into contact with the most prominent persons and movements in official and undergraduate affairs. It also leads to positions of responsibility in one of the most important non-athletic activities in which an undergraduate can serve the University.

Contrary to expectations there will be no competition in editorial writing during the first half-year. It was planned to hold such a competition for Juniors, but the quality of work done by 1913 men in the first competition last spring was so high that all the available places except one were filled. This one remaining position will be filled in the spring editorial competition open to members of both Sophomore and Junior classes.
