Review of Rowing

The development of the University eight during the two weeks in which it has been on the water has been somewhat slower than usual. The work of the first few days, with six veterans in the boat, was very encouraging, after which there was a distinct falling off in form. The men were unable to catch together and lost the hard drive on the finish, which was hurried. This made them force the recovery and lose control of their bodies, and so fail to keep the boat on an even keel. The last few days, however, have seen steady improvement. With a better proportion and a harder finish the boat showed good power and travelled well between strokes. On several stretches yesterday most of the faults were overcome and the boat went very well, although the bow men were a little late in taking the stroke off 7 and stroke. The temporary absence of Captain Strong was a handicap to the eight throughout the rowing yesterday.

The second University eight has shown up extremely well, and in point of form compares favorably with the University crew. The men are well together and Chanler at stroke gives a good rythm with a powerful swing.

The three and one-half mile handicap race between the three University crews will be held on November 15, the course being from the Stillman Infirmary to the Union Boat Club. One week later, on November 22, the double scull race for the Blake cup and the single scull race for the Herrick cup will be held. These cups have been presented to encourage sculling among the members of the University squad in order to acquire quickness and poise in the eight-oared crews.

Bumping Races Tomorrow.

The bumping races for the dormitory crews will be held tomorrow and Thursday over the stretch above the Stillman Infirmary. On Friday the crews which make the best showing in the bumping races will row a scratch race of a mile and a half for the Filley Cup. In these races the crews will be started in the order determined by the standing in the dormitory races last fall. In the preparatory work this year the best showing has been made by the Randolph, Claverly, and Outsiders' crews.
