Drawless Bridge Opposed

The question of the construction of a drawless bridge over the Charles River at Boylston street has been considered by the War Department and reported upon unfavorably. A graduate of the University who withholds his name has offered to spend $300,000 for the construction of a suitable and decorative bridge provided that a draw is not required. The War Department maintains that the construction of a drawless bridge will destroy navigation on the river which may be made practicable as far as Dedham.

A bill introduced into Congress by Representative McCall for the authorization of a drawless bridge is now being discussed. If this bill becomes a law the bridge may be built in spite of the War Department's objections.
