Niles Won State Championship

N. W. Niles '09 defeated R. C. Seaver for the tennis championship of Massachusetts yesterday afternoon at the Longwood Cricket Club, winning by the decisive score of 6-3, 6-0, 6-3. Niles came through the tournament with the greatest ease, losing but 16 games in six matches. Against Seaver, as against all his other opponents, he played almost faultless tennis and was not in the least pushed to win. His serve, falling deep in first one corner of the court and then the other, and with a high-bouncing twist, proved almost impossible for Seaver to handle, while his net game was brilliantly sharp and severe. From the back-court he played with a remarkable combination of speed and accuracy, making almost no errors. When in College, Niles was captain of the University team in 1909, University champion and first man on the team for four years, and intercollegiate champion in his Senior year. This spring, with A. S. Dabney '10 as his partner, he also won the Massachusetts state championship doubles.
