The University crew defeated the Freshman and second University crews by three-quarters of a length in a closely contested race held over the one and seven-eighths mile course in the Basin yesterday afternoon. All three crews rowed thirty-six strokes during the first few minutes, at the end of which the second boat led the University crew by a half-length and the Freshman eight by a full length. At the Harvard Bridge the first and second crews were even and the Freshman, although rowing smoothly, were a length behind. During the last half of the race the Freshman and second crews pushed the University crew hard, but by several short sprints the first eight at last gained a lead of three-quarters of a length, which it held until the finish. The Freshman and second crews crossed the finish line on even terms.
The showing of the Freshman and second eights was good; but the University boat rowed in poor form, lacking power at the finish as well as control over the slides. In the Freshman boat, Parmenter took Nelson's place at three, where he probably will row in the Cornell race, as Nelson may be ineligible.
The orders of the crews were:
University crew.--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Waid; 6, Newton; 5, Bacon; 4, Withington; 3, Balch; 2, Sargent; bow, Whitney; cox., King.
Second University crew.--Stroke, Forster; 7, Metcalf; 6, Strong; 5, Hooper; 4, L. Smith; 3, Loring; 2, Waite; bow, Wiggins; cox., Voorhees.
Freshman crew.--Stroke, Goodale; 7, Moffat; 6, Stratton; 5, Keays; 4, Lincoln; 3, Parmenter; 2, G. Cutler; bow, Meyer; cox., Abeles.
