Yesterday afternoon the University eight rowed up-stream to the bend at the head of the half-mile stretch above the Infirmary, accompanied by Coach Wray in a single. The crew rowed in short stretches at an average stroke of about 30, with the exception of one sprint when the beat went up to 40, and two racing starts. On the first of these the eight rowed just under 41.
Just below the Infirmary the University crew lined up with the Freshman eight for a start and won by about three-quarters of a length, rowing close to 43. Coach Wray gave most of his attention to the finish and the eight continued to improve in this respect. Stroke Cutler showed his ability to maintain a long stroke at a high beat and was well backed up by the rest of the men, although 3 was a bit late at times getting in at the catch, and 2 was unsteady in his in-board work.
Work of Freshman Crew.
The Freshman crew had very light work. As Warren, who has been rowing bow, will be out of the boat until after the Cornell race, Meyer, who has been rowing 3, will row bow, and Parmenter will be at 3. The crew kept the boat well on her keel and had a good finish at a low stroke; in the racing start with the University eight the slide-work was good.
