CLASS CREWS RACE TODAY

Beacon Cup Regatta In Basin at 5.--Criticism of Eights' Rowing.

The Beacon Cup Regatta for class crews will be held at 5 o'clock this afternoon over the mile and seven-eighths course in the Basin from the Cottage Farm Bridge to the finish opposite the Union Boat Club. The members of the winning crew will be awarded their numerals. Besides the four regular class crews the second and third Freshman eights will enter the race. The winning upperclass crew will receive its numerals no matter where it finishes.

As the order of the Freshman crew has been practically the same except for minor changes for over two months, the crew is much better together and more advanced than the three upperclass crews. The men in the boat are just as heavy and strong as the members of the heaviest upperclass crews, and, under the direction of Coach Wray, the crew has developed a long, powerful stroke with good slide work. The eight with its advantage of a regular order, long rows, and superior coaching, should undoubtedly win the race.

The three upperclass crews have all had changes in their wonders during the last three days, but in spite of this fact they have all materially, improved, and seem to be evenly matched. The Senior and Sophomore crews have been developed under Coach Brown. Although the Senior eight has had some trough the Senior eight has had some trouble in maintaining a high stroke, the boat is manned with heavy and powerful men, and the crew is fit for a hard race. The Sophomore crew is the lightest of the upperclass crews, and does not seem to be quite as good as either the Seniors or the Juniors, but the eight has been strengthened by the return of Barnes to 7, and has improved during the last two days. The Junior crew, under Coach Stephenson, was badly defeated by the second University crew last Monday, and showed many faults in the race. The bad tendency to jab the oars in after hanging on the catch has been partially corrected, and the crew is certainly rowing in better form now than that shown on Monday. The second and third Freshman crews are well up to the standard of secondary Freshman crews.

The orders in the race will be:

Senior crew.--Stroke, Martin; 7, Platt; 6, Maxwell; 5, Henderson; 4, Hill; 3, Macleod; 2, Aspinwall; bow, Parsons; cox., Burnham.
