PROGRAM OF SPRING SPORTS

Summary of Work Begun and Planned in Various Branches of Athletics.

For the benefit of men who desire to take part in some form of organized sport during the spring, the following summary of the varied opportunities for athletic activity is given:

Track.

Candidates for the University and Freshman track teams will be called out the first of next week and practice will be held regularly every day under the direction of Coach Donovan, in the track events and of Coach Quinn, in the field events. The first competition which the men will get, will be in the annual spring handicap games on April 14. Following this will come the spring vacation, during which it has been planned to take a short trip. After the vacation, on March 30, the class games will come. By this time the training table will be made up of the men who have shown ability. However, as a result of the consolation races, which come soon after the class games, more men will be taken on the table. The first dual meet will be held with Dartmouth on May 7, and a good idea of the team as a whole can then be gained. The following Saturday will be the Yale dual meet and a week from then on May 21 will come the Harvard-Yale Freshman Dual Meet at New Haven. The track season will then close for all except those entered in the Intercollegiate Meet on May 27 and 28 at Philadelphia.

Baseball.

Candidates for the University and Freshman baseball squads have already been called out and have been working together since the mid-year examinations. The next chance for men in organized baseball will be the call for candidates for the second team which will come after the spring recess. The second nine will have a schedule of its own, which will include about ten games with the schools near Boston and with several other second teams. Those who do not wish to play regularly can enter in the Leiter Cup series which will start immediately after the vacation and will last until the end of May. The rules and purpose of the Leiter Cup series have already been printed in the CRIMSON; and the blue-book is in Leavitt and Peirce's.

Tennis.

The tennis courts on Jarvis Field are now ready for use. Men will practice on these courts until the last of April when trial matches for the University team will be held. Six men chosen by elimination will compose the team. Matches with Yale and Princeton have been arranged; there will also be from time to time practice games with the Law School team. A separate tournament for the College champion will be held the middle of May. Each class will have an elimination tournament and the winners of each of the four classes will play for the College title. Soon after this will come the class championship series in which six men chosen from each class also by elimination will hold a tournament; the class team winning the most matches will be the class champion. All the tournaments this spring will only be for singles, as the doubles championship was held last fall.

Crew.

Rowing is now well under way for the University and Freshman crews, and the class crews have been out for about two weeks. However, men may still report for their class crews as the orders have not yet been definitely settled. As individuals men may belong to either boathouse and have all the privileges of members. About the middle of May, the annual race of singles for the Carroll Cup which is open to all members of the University will be held. The University crew will have the following races: April 23, Annapolis at Annapolis; May 30, Cornell on the Charles River; and June 30, Yale at New London.

Football.

Regular practice for the University football team this spring will begin on Monday March 28 and will continue until the spring recess. This practice will be mainly to teach the rudiments of the game to the men and is of the utmost importance to those who intend to try for the team next fall. As the new rules will probably be ready then a great deal of the time will be spent in studying them. Scrimmages will not be held until the last part of the last week and on the last day, there will be a long scrimmage with the usual length halves between the first and second elevens.

Lacrosse.

Both the University and Freshman lacrosse teams have already been called out and are practicing daily behind the baseball stands. There will be a second team this year which will probably have its own schedule. During the spring recess the University team will go south and will play games with Johns Hopkins, Annapolis, Swarthmore, and Stevens. After the vacation will come the league games with Columbia, Hobart and Cornell. The Freshman team also has several games scheduled with high schools and other freshman teams. The class games will be held during the last week in March. An elimination series will be held and individual cups and class lacrosse numerals will be awarded the winning class team.

Shooting.

The shooting traps on Soldiers Field were opened last week and the candidates for the University and Freshman teams have been practicing since then. Once a week, for six weeks, a competition for a medal will be held at the traps. Besides these competitions the University team will meet the Boston Athletic Association, Princeton, the Palefaces, Yale, the Norfolk Country Club, and will enter in the Intercollegiates. The Freshman team will have its annual meet with Yale the last of May.
