TWO SCRIMMAGES YESTERDAY

University Team Played 1914.--Substitutes Scored 3 Points on Second.

Yesterday afternoon the University football squad was given the hardest work since the West Point game in a scrimmage with the Freshman eleven, winning by the score of 3 to 0. The substitutes then lined up for half an hour against the second team. The former scrimmage was the first opportunity this season to compare the strength of the Freshman team with that of the University squad, and, although Corbett and T. Frothingham were both absent, the University backfield experienced little difficulty in piercing the opposing line.

Perkins, who has been out of the game with an injured shoulder for over three weeks, was in the line-up yesterday, but his place will probably be taken by Huntington for the remainder of the week, as Perkins's bad shoulder was slightly hurt again yesterday.

The Freshmen kicked off to Campbell, who ran in 20 yards to his 35-yard line, whence by line plays the ball was worked steadily to the Freshman's 40-yard line. Here a penalty advanced the ball to the 30-yard line. After two line plays, on which the opposing forwards allowed a gain of only five yards, Lewis kicked a field-goal from the 25-yard line.

After this score, the ball was given to the first team in the middle of the field, in order further to try out the second-string backs. A forward pass from Wigglesworth to Graustein netted 14 yards, and several well directed plays in the line placed the ball in the possession of the University team on the Freshmen's 14-yard line. The ball was then given to the Freshmen, but the University line allowed them very little gain. At the end of a short attempt by 1914 to advance the ball, both elevens were sent to the Locker Building.

The first team substitutes and the second team then lined up for a long scrimmage, in which the former won on a dropkick by Potter from the 20-yard line. Throughout the game the substitutes had the advantage, but seemed unable to make the most of their superiority, owing chiefly to fumbles which occurred at critical moments. However, the strong protection given to Potter by the substitutes' line enabled him to score from a difficult angle, and showed that the line could hold, when hard pressed.
