First Bumping Race Starts at 3.45

The first of the inter-dormitory bumping races will be rowed this afternoon over the same course as last year. The races will start at the end of the long stretch above the Boylston street bridge, beyond the second bend, and will finish at an imaginary line between the bridge end of the Newell boathouse floats and a range flag. The crews will row in two divisions, starting at 3.45 and 4.15 o'clock respectively, and will take their positions in the following order:

First division: 1, Thayer; 2, Randolph; 3, Claverly; 4, Weld.

Second division: 1, Mt. Auburn street; 2, Brentford; 3, Dunster-Dana-Drayton; 4, Perkins; 5, Russell.

Rules and Regulations.

The crews will line up for the start 60 feet of open water apart from bow to stern, the starting positions being indicated by buoys placed in the river at the proper intervals. Number one in each division will be farthest down-stream, heading the line. A series of three shots will be fired for a starting signal. Between the first and second shots there will be two minutes, and between the second and third one minutes. The third shot will be the signal for the start. Referees will be stationed along the bank, and bumps will be signaled either through a megaphone or by a revolver shot. As soon as the signal is given, both the bumping crew and the crew bumped must drop out. All bumps must be made on the outside. Each crew must keep to the inside course in rounding a curve, to give the crew behind a chance to bump. A crew disregarding this rule will be considered bumped.

All members of the crews must be dressed to row at their respective boat-houses at 3 o'clock sharp. The first division race will be started promptly at 3.45 o'clock, and any crew not at its buoy by that time will be disqualified. There will be two days of bumping races and on Thursday the best crews will race over a mile and three-quarter course in the Basin, from scratch.

The Filley Cup.

The Filley Cup, presented by B. A. G. Fuller '00 in the fall of 1906 as a perpetual challenge cup to be competed for annually and to be held by the winner one year, will again be awarded to the winning crew this year. In 1906 and 1907 the cup was won by Claverly, in 1908 by Mt. Auburn street, and last year by Thayer. Coach Wray, Captain Cutler and other members of the University squad will act as officials. Every official who is able to should bring a revolver, and all must report at the Newell boathouse at 3.15 o'clock sharp.

In the work of preparation Claverly, Mt. Auburn street and Randolph have made the best showing this year and should do well today, but surprises from other crews may be expected.
