Communication

Only 51 Freshman Crew Candidates.

[We invite all men in the University to submit communications on subjects of timely interest.]

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

Yesterday's call for Freshman crew candidates brought out but 51 men. This is a woefully small number, easily the smallest in a good many years, and seems to be quite out of place after the good showing of our crews last year.

Yale, as must be perfectly evident to everyone in the Freshman class, is this year making a supreme effort to win the class as well as the university race, a fact which should only be an added inspiration to beat them. Men must not think that inexperience is a drawback. It is especially urged that such men, if of a reasonable size come out. They can very often be developed into better oars than the man who has learned to row before, for the latter may not be able to master Wray's stroke after learning something far different. It seems a great pity that a class which has shown up so well in athletics so far should fall down at this crucial time.

I sincerely hope this call will bring out almost as many men again as reported yesterday. The new candidates will please report at the boathouse at 3.30 o'clock, or later if this is impossible. E. C. CUTLER '09.
