The Freshman football team was defeated by Worcester Academy at Worcester last Saturday by the score of 11 to 6. The teams were very evenly matched and the game, on the whole, was well-played, fast and interesting. Melican and Kelley played star games for Worcester. Melican recovered two onside kicks and two punts, both the latter on Harvard's 3-yard line. It was his work which made both Worcester's scores possible. Kelley and Wilson made several end runs for 20-yard gains. Lewis and Carr did the best work for the Freshmen. The former gained consistently through Worcester's left guard, the weak place in the Worcester line, and the latter recovered a short forward pass from Gardner for the Freshmen's only score. Felton out-kicked Kelley, but this advantage was more than offset by Melican's ability to regain Kelley's kicks.
The Game in Detail.
Graustein ran Dutton's kick-off back 10 yards. Lewis made 20 yards through centre, but Graustein lost five yards, and Felton kicked to Wilson. Another exchange of punts followed. Kelley ran through the whole Freshman team for a touchdown, which was not allowed on account of offside play. Melican recovered Kelley's punt on Harvard's 3-yard line and Bartlett was sent over for a touchdown. Dutton missed a difficult goal. Soon after the kick-off, Kelley punted to Gardner, who, by good dodging, ran it back 20 yards to his own 35-yard line. On twelve plays, for the most part through right guard by Lewis, the ball was brought to Worcester's 3-yard line, where a penalty set the Freshmen back five yards. A short forward pass, Gardner to Carr, scored a touchdown for Harvard. Lewis kicked a difficult goal. Wendell ran the kick-off back 20 yards. Felton kicked to Melican, who was downed by Carr for no gain. A forward pass to Sibley gained 10 yards, but the next play, also a forward pass, was declared illegal.
An interchange of punts followed the kick-off in the second half. Melican then recovered Kelley's punt on Harvard's 3-yard line. Bartlett scored a touchdown on the second play, and Dutton kicked an easy goal. Lewis was slightly injured and Marsh took his place. After two more exchanges of punts, Sibley recovered Kelley's punt on Harvard's 25-yard line. Wilson tried a field goal, which failed. Felton kicked from Harvard's 25-yard line. Lingard blocked Kelley's punt, which Hollister recovered and ran 20 yards to Worcester's 26-yard line. An onside kick was blocked by Worcester, and, after two more plays, time was called.
