Yesterday afternoon the candidates for the University crew reported at the University boathouse at 4 o'clock for the first day's work in fall rowing. Three eights were made up and sent up-stream in short stretches as far as the Brighton bridge. Coach Wray followed the work of the men from the John Harvard.
In the University crew there were only three veterans in the boat, as L. Withington, who rows 5, has gone out for the football team. Cutler was in his regular seat at stroke with Waid at 7, while Newton, who stroked last year's Freshman crew, was in at 6. Metcalf, last year's Freshman eight captain and 7, filled in Withington's place at 5. Bacon was at 4 again with Whitney and Sargent at 3 and bow respectively. Leslie, who was at 4 in the Freshman eight last year, rowed 2. The rowing of the University crew seemed fairly good for the first day out, but the slide work was erratic and the men did not time their work so as to be well together at the catch, although the blade work was pretty clean. Voorhees coxswained in place of King, who is sick.
Three members of the Freshman crew and Forster of the four-oar were in the make-up of the second University crew. Strong, although he is new to the starboard side of the boat, as he rowed 6 in his Freshman eight, showed-up well at 5, and he seems to have a good chance for Withington's place in the University crew. This crew seemed to be fairly well together in spite of the fact that the boat was not on a very even keel and the oars did not come out cleanly at the finish.
The orders:
University crew--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Waid; 6, Newton; 5, Metcalf; 4, Bacon; 3, Whitney; 2, Leslie; bow, Sargent; cox., Voorhees.
