ROWING FOR CLASS REGATTA

All But Freshman Crews in Unsettled Condition.--Carroll Cup Entries.

The Beacon Cup Regatta has been provisionally arranged to be rowed at 2 o'clock on Saturday, May 16, over the one and seven-eighths miles course from the Longwood Bridge to the foot of Berkeley street. Immediately after the class races the single scull race for the Carroll perpetual challenge cup will be rowed over the one-mile course from the Longwood Bridge through the Harvard Bridge. The winner will have his name inscribed on the cup, and will hold it for one year. All members of the University are eligible to compete for the cup, and there will be no entry charge. Entries should be made as soon as possible to K. Howes '08, Holworthy 21, or to Charles Hart at the Newell boat house.

The orders of the class crews have been very unsettled during the past week, and much remains to be accomplished before the races. The prospects of the Freshman crew are the brightest, as they have rowed together for the last month with very few changes.

The Seniors lost McDonald at stroke early last week, and Fahnestock was put in for two days until he was taken up on the University squad. On Monday Ball was tried, and he will undoubtedly be kept in that position. The crew has improved rapidly in the last three days. They are fairly smooth, very long, and have plenty of power, but they still lack life and ability to row a high stroke.

So many changes have been made in the Junior crew that they are not as good as they were before the vacation. Rackemann and Ellis have been used on the University second crew this week, and consequently Vaughan has been changed from 2 to bow and Haines has been put in his place. The boat has been fairly steady and there is plenty of snap in the work, but the time has not been so good nor the rowing in general so smooth as before the changes.

The Sophomore crew has improved rapidly since vacation. Martin, who replaced Maxwell at stroke, puts more drive into the crew and gets them along more smoothly. The men still rush their slides, however, and cut the finish of the stroke short. Loring, who has been sick, has returned, thus completing the port side, but the starboard side is still unsettled.

Several experiments have been made to find a man to till Perkins's place at 3 in the Freshman boat. Whitney was tried for a few days, then Oveson was put in, and Peabody rowed that position yesterday. The Freshmen are powerful, and their slide work is good, but otherwise they still show roughness.
