Since the race with Annapolis on April 22, there has been a slight but noticeable slump in the work of the University crew. The boat is unsteady, and the strokes are carried through with uncertainty and lack of precision. This is not unnatural after the tension preceding a race has been removed.
During the past week Coach Wray has laid greater emphasis on form than on speed. Whenever the water has allowed, the crew has pulled over the long course from the boathouse to be basin and back, rowing mostly in short stretches, with a low stroke. Occasionally there has been practicing in starting, and a high stroke maintained for a short distance. Yesterday, on the return stretch from Brighton Bridge, the stroke was raised as high as 45 to the minute, and the crew, although unusually heavy and powerful, carried the high stroke without much effort. No change has been made in the order since the Annapolis race, in fact none since Sargent returned to stroke on March 24. What Coach Wray will now prepare for will be the Cornell race on May 30; the course will be less than two miles, and much will depend on a good start and ability to carry along a high stroke. After the race with Cornell the crew will have only a week more on the Charles, going to Red Top on June 9.
One or two changes have been made in the second University crew. Morgan, who has been rowing at four, has gone in at stroke in place of J. Cutler, and Fahnestock has been taken from the class crew, and put in at Morgan's place. In the absence of E. Cutler, Captain Richardson rowed in the second boat yesterday.
The orders:
Crew A--Stroke, Sargent; 7, Richardson; 6, E. Bacon; 5, Waid; 4, Lunt; 3, Severance; 2, Fish; bow, Faulkner; cox., Blagden.
Crew B--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Marvin; 6, Lovering; 5, Withington; 4, Fahnestock; 3, Tilton; 2, G. Bacon; bow, E. Cutler; cox., King.
Freshman Rowing.
The Freshman crews are progressing rapidly. Several shifts have been made in the past week, but the majority of the men in the first boat have now held their places for some time. Shillito has been put in at bow, Whitney at three, Withington has gone from port to starboard, exchanging six for five and Waite has shifted from three to four. Owing to these recent changes the rowing yesterday was not up to the standard. Cutler is a good stroke, and puts rhythm and life into the rest of the crew.
The orders of the first two Freshman crews yesterday follow:
Crew A--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Hooper; 6, Eaton; 5, Withington; 4, Waite; 3, Whitney; 2, Forster; bow, Shillito; cox., Fales.
Crew B--Stroke, Reece; 7, Jowett; 6, Smith; 5, Oveson; 4, Ellis; 3, Perkins; 2, Peabody; bow, Shaw; cox., Everett.
