On Saturday afternoon the second University crew defeated the third and fourth crews in a fast and exciting race on the Charles River. At the finish the second boat led the third by something less than half a length; the fourth boat was over a length behind the third. The time made was excellent, the course of nearly one and seven-eighths miles being covered in 9 minutes, 12 seconds. The record for the course is 9 minutes, 19 seconds; but as the crews on Saturday started a block nearer the finish than the full course requires, the time cannot be taken for a new record. All three crews rowed a good race; in fact there was very little difference in form between the second and third boats, but the second had greater power and endurance, and was able to pull into the lead just before the judges' boat was reached.
At seventeen minutes past three, Captian Richardson fired the starting gun from the bow of the John Harvard. Each crew caught the water at the same time; the second boat held the Boston side of the river, the fourth the Cambridge side, with the third between. J. Cutler, stroking the third, at once brought his crew into the lead by a few yards, and the fourth dropped back behind the second by about the same distance; each crew was rowing 30 strokes to the minute. In this same relative position the first two crews swept under the Harvard Bridge, but the fourth eight had dropped back in the rear almost a full length. After the Harvard Bridge had been passed, Reece, stroking the second, put the stroke up slightly and gained on Cutler until the noses of the two boats were exactly even. Then Cutler raised his stroke perceptibly, jumping from 31 to 35, but could not prevent the second from pulling ahead slowly but surely, rowing 33, strokes to the minute. It was only a matter of a few seconds until the judges' boat was passed.
As a result of the race the following men were retained for the second University crew: G. G. Bacon '08, E. C. Cutler '09, S. A. Fahnestock '08, M. A. King '10, R. S. Lovering '08, S. W. Marvin '10, F. A. Reece '09, C. E. Tilton, Jr., '08, P. Wyman '10.
