Obituary

Professor George Alonzo Bartlett.

George Alonzo Bartlett, professor emeritus in the University, died very suddenly Wednesday morning at his rooms in Ware Hall. The funeral services will be held in Appleton Chapel this morning at 11 o'clock, and will be conducted by Professor F. G. Peabody '69.

Professor Bartlett entered Bowdoin College; but before the completion of his course the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the Union Army, where he distinguished himself by his bravery. He was captured and imprisoned, but an exchange was effected and he returned north. In 1872 he was made an instructor in German at the University, and two years later became assistant professor of German. In 1891 he was made associate professor, but resigned in 1903. From 1891 until 1903 he was regent of the University. Professor Bartlett was not known by any of the present generation of undergraduates, but he will be long remembered by his friends and by those of the graduates who knew him.
