SECRET PRACTICE YESTERDAY

New Plays Tried Out.--Campbell on Field.--Substitutes Defeat Second.

The University football team had its first secret practice yesterday afternoon, the work lasting about thirty minutes. Several new plays were tried out, and White and Smith frequently interchanged positions. After the secret practice the University substitutes and the second team had a twenty-five minute scrimmage, in which the substitutes scored twice. In the preliminary practice the first squad tackled the dummy, and after the secret session there was short signal practice. D. C. Campbell '02, captain of the victorious 1901 eleven, was on the field in football clothes and devoted his time to coaching the ends, putting a good deal of speed into their work.

Substitutes Scored Twice in Scrimmage.

The University substitutes scored a touchdown on the second team in the first four minutes of scrimmage. Galatti received the ball on the kick-off and ran it back to the 35-yard line. Gray punted to Page, who fumbled on the second's 50-yard line. Leslie went through right tackle for seven yards and Long tried the same side of the line for six more yards. The second team got the ball on a poor forward pass, but Page's kick was blocked and the substitutes went across the second's line for the first score Dunlap kicked the goal. Galatti again received the kick-off and ran back to the 36-yard line. Long made ten yards on line plunges, and the second gained the ball on an onside kick.

Page's short punt went outside, and after Long and Leslie had made four yards apiece through right tackle, Galatti made a pretty forward pass to Cutting, who carried the ball over the line for the second touchdown. At this point the teams were almost entirely substituted, and the rest of the scrimmage consisted of an exchange of punts and on-side kicks.

The line-up for the scrimmage was: SUBSTITUTES.  SECOND TEAM.
