TEAM HELD SECRET PRACTICE

New Formations Tried Out.--Substitutes Defeated Second in Scrimmage.

The practice of the University football squad yesterday afternoon consisted of an hour's secret signal practice and a 20-minute scrimmage between the substitutes and the second eleven. The work of the University team will probably be secret during the rest of the week, with occasional open scrimmages. There were a few new formations tried out, and E. Graves, former captain and tackle at West Point, was on hand to coach the guards and tackles. Graves arrived yesterday and will remain for some time.

The scrimmage between the substitutes and the second eleven lasted twenty minutes and resulted in one touchdown for the former team, which was made on straight line plunging from the middle of the field. The second team used the forward pass with considerable success.

Dunlap kicked to Crocker, who ran the ball back twenty-five yards to the 35-yard line. Minot made two yards at centre, and Gilbert punted to Galatti, who was downed in the middle of the field. Jowett and Long netted seven yards on two tackle plays. Ver Wiebe failed to gain. Galatti's onside kick was recovered by Withington on the 25-yard line, and after a few line plays the ball was carried across the second's line for a touchdown. During the rest of the scrimmage the ball changed hands frequently, staying in the middle of the field.

The teams lined up as follows: SUBSTITUTES.  SECOND TEAM.
