SECRET PRACTICE YESTERDAY

Several New Formations Tried Out.--Enthusiastic Send-off Given Team.

Secret practice was held by the University football squad yesterday for nearly an hour in preparation for the Annapolis game tomorrow. There was no scrimmage, but only light work. The backfield candidates were first taken out onto the Freshman gridiron and given practice in catching punts with the sun in their eyes and against a clear sky. Coach Daly instructed the backs in heeling fair catches facing the sun and with the opposing team running down on them. The results were very satisfactory. Burr got off some long spirals of fifty yards and more.

In the Stadium the practice was entirely secret, the greater part of the time being spent in signal drill. Several new formations that have not as yet been tried in any game called forth special atention from Coaches Haughton, Daly and Campbell, and worked well with no opposition. Cutler drove the team well and met with a good response from the players.

After the players had been sent in to the Locker Building, Kennard tried drop-kicking goals at various angles. His efforts were successful in nearly every instance. Smith, Hoar and Forchheimer did not report because of injuries. Hoar received a bad bruise in the scrimmage Wednesday that may necessitate his staying out of the game tomorrow.

Team Left for Annapolis Last Night.

The team left the Square in special cars last evening at 7.15, cheered by a body of over 200 undergraduates. They took the Federal Express for Baltimore at the Back Bay station and are due to arrive at their destination this morning at 8.41. The day will be spent at the Baltimore Country Club, where light practice will be held this afternoon. After the game tomorrow the team will return to the Hotel Belvidere, Baltimore, and will attend the theatre in the evening. The men will spend Sunday at the Country Club, leaving for Boston in the evening.
