TRACK CANDIDATES' MEETING

156 Men Reported Last Night.--Three Cups Offered by W. Minot '07.

The track season opened last night with the candidates meeting in the Assembly Room of the Union. One hundred and fifty-six men, 22 more than last year, handed in their names as candidates. W. F. Garcelon '95 presided and introduced the speakers.

W. Minot '07, captain of last year's University track team, was the first speaker. He emphasized the necessity of developing a strong team this year to keep the nine-year dual cup from Yale. Each university has won the cup four times, and its permanent possession rests with this year's team. Minot has offered three silver cups to the men showing the greatest "general merit" during the season. Winners of the three cups will be picked from men in the shot-put or hammer-throw, the high-jump or pole-vault, and the hurdles. The competition is open to all members of the University.

M. H. Stone '07 compared the prospects of Harvard and Yale for the dual meet and expressed his fear that the University team would be over-confident, a great danger to any team. The meet can be won only by good, persistent training, consistent work, and a grim resolve to win.

Coach W. E. Quinn called for more men, especially in the hammer throw. It is a poor policy to be content with the present strength of the team.

Coach J. G. Lathrop said that there was no reason for being confident of a victorious team this spring and the men must work hard and get out new material.

W. F. Garcelon '95 said that he wanted to see the University team win from Yale, and to have them show courage and pertinacity.

Regular work will begin today. Coach Lathrop will be at the Gymnasium in the morning and afternoon and will have charge of the candidates for all track events. There will be practice squads at 11, 12, 3.30, and 4.30 o'clock. Coach Quinn will be at the baseball cage to coach the field event men from 10 to 12.30 o'clock and from 2.30 to 5.30 o'clock.
